This enchanting
animated tale by Hayao Miyazaki takes its basic script from the
fantasy world of children. In one scene the girl is told to hold
her breath while she crosses the bridge in order to remain invisible;
a critical insight into, and courageous use of, the private world of
youthful fantasies.
Hayao takes this
childrens world and casts it into a fascinating mould. The story
covers the emotional journey of a young girl who stands alone in a
strange world after her parents are transformed into animals as
punishment for their greed, and we are invited to witness her journey
from a character plagued by uncertainty to a confident and fully
developed character.
This is a long movie
and it simply oozes charm throughout. Hayao has talent to
burn...
My only critisism is
the conclusion. It simply did not satisfy me and did not seem to fit
the in-depth fantasy realm of the rest of the movie.
Conclusion:
This is one of those unique movies that allows you to experience
something unique - simply by passively watching the artistry of an
enchanting story well told. For lateral-thinking viewers, the
story will remain in the back of the mind for many weeks to come and a
gentle smile will keep returning from its memory....
