Australia - brief history

It is thought that the first Australian Aboriginal setllers arrived in Australia about 40,000 years before exploration began in the 17th century.  Formal territory claims were made by Captain James Cook who took posession of Australia in 1770 in the name of Great Britain.  Six colonies were created in the 18th and 19th centuries. These colonies held their first Federal Convention in March 1891, and in 1901 the colonies federated to become the Commonwealth of Australia.  This Commonwealth took advantage of Australia's abundant natural resources and began to develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries.  Australia made a major contribution towards the Brittish effort in both World War 1 and World War 2.  In recent times Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive highly advanced market economy.
